Tattoos

Traditional Tattoos – These tattoos, sometimes referred to as 'old school,' are bold, simple, and very graphically-oriented designs consisting of heavy black outlines and a liberal use of black shading with minimal color. In addition, they are rendered in such a uniform and stylized way that everything within them appears as two-dimensional shapes, without the illusion of three-dimensional depth.

Tribal tattoos – They are random patterns of lines and curves put together to create an abstract form of art which are sometimes used to define muscle groups and/or the natural curves of the wearer. Though sometimes they have different color like reds, blue, greens or purples, they are almost always black.

Celtic Tattoos – Whether or not they form a recognizable shape, celtic tattoos are defined by the interweaving patterns formed inside the borders of the tattoo itself. Some may appear in the shape of a cross, Claddagh, or dog. For people of the Celtic heritage, Celtic tattoos are a way of showing pride in the heritage.

Neo-Traditional Tattoos – Some people describe neo-traditional tattoos as a combination of traditional and new school tattooing while others simply deem them old school tattoos with a new twist.

Photorealistic Tattoos – Highly detailed tattoos that look like photographs on your skin.

Cover up – A larger tattoo that is tattooed on top of an undesirable preexisting tattoo that is used to mask the latter.

Rework Tattoo – When a preexisting tattoo is either faded or of poor quality, a tattoo artist will "rework" the tattoo by tattooing the same design over the former to freshen the colors or hide the previous flaws of the former tattoo.

Memorial Tattoos – Tattoos that are meant to signify an occasion or pay tribute to a lost loved one.

Black and gray tattoos – Tattoos that consist of pure black tattoo ink which is diluted with a clear solution like water, alcohol, or witch hazel in varying amounts to produce as wide of a value scale as possible. This value scale ranges from blank, un-tattooed skin (being the lightest value, or shade) to solid black tattooed skin (being the darkest value, or shade). This type of tattooing compares very closely to pencil drawings.

Asian Tattoos are characterized by Chinese and Japanese imagery. Images frequently used in Asian art include cranes, dragons, fish, tigers, samurai warriors and Buddhist deities. Kanji are also a feature of Asian-style tattoos.

Kanji – Kanji are the characters that are used in the Japanese writing system.
